Pinocchio comes to Platinum Edition DVD and Disney Blu-ray in 2009. Disney's second full-length animated movie returns with the vivid enhancements that come with modern animation technology. Pinocchio won two Oscars, one for Best Score and another for the unforgettable song "When You Wish upon a Star.” It has not been commerically available since 2002.

Pinocchio was originally released to theatres by on February 7, 1940. The movie is based on the book Pinocchio: Tale of a Puppet by Carlo Collodi. It was made shortly after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The story involves a wooden puppet being brought to life by a blue fairy, who tells him he can become a real boy if he proves himself "brave, truthful, and unselfish". This begins Pinocchio's adventures to become a real boy, which involves many encounters with a variety of shady characters.

Pinocchio in Detail:
Geppetto makes a wooden puppet named Pinocchio. He wishes for Pinocchio to be a real boy so he would have his own son. This wish is unexpectedly granted by the Blue Fairy who animates the puppet, telling him that he has to prove himself in order to become a "real boy". The Blue Fairy assigns Jiminy Cricket to act as Pinocchio's conscience and keep him from doing wrong. Jiminy requests that if he succeeds, that he receives a medal. Jiminy is not too successful in keeping Pinocchio out of trouble mainly because Pinocchio repeatedly ignores Jiminy's good advice, so most of the movie is spent with Pinocchio in trouble of some sort or another.

Originally, Pinocchio's character was to be portrayed as a wise guy, as rambunctious and sarcastic as the puppet in the original novel. He looked exactly like a real wooden puppet with, among other things, a long pointed nose, a peaked cap, and bare wooden hands. Walt Disney found that the character was not one that one could sympathize with and so the designers had to redesign the puppet as much as possible. Eventually, they revised Pinocchio to make him look more like a real boy, with a child-like nose, a child's Tyrolean hat, and cartoon character 4-fingered (or 3 and a thumb) hands with Mickey Mouse-type gloves on them. The only parts of him that still looked more or less like a puppet were his arms and legs.

Movie Release:
Pinocchio has been re-released to the theaters in 1945, 1954, 1962, 1971, 1978, 1984, and 1992. The 1992 re-issue was digitally restored by cleaning and removing scratches from the original negatives one frame at a time, eliminating soundtrack distortions, and revitalizing the color. The movie has also received four video releases (and two DVD releases), being a hot-seller in 1985 (this print was re-mastered and re-issued in 1986). The 1992 re-issue underwent more comprehensive digital restoration and released on VHS which was also the film's first release on Disney DVD in 1999 and 2000. The third DVD release and only the second Disney Blu-ray Disc release, following Sleeping Beauty's October 2008 release (a Platinum Editon), is scheduled for March 10, 2009.
